The nucleus of the MSC, and known as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of Malaysia, Cyberjaya is a township program initiated by the Malaysian Government under its Multimedia Super Corridor (also known as MSC) plan. Cyberjaya was officially opened and launched by the former Malaysia Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1999. Cyberjaya’s communication infrastructure is facilitated via a fiber optics backbone. There are several companies who are providing communication facilities, broadband Internet access, Wireless Broadband access, etc.
Situated about 50km from the capital Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya is populated by about 11,000 people on the area spanning 7000 acres although during the day, employees coming into Cyberjaya could amount up to almost 30000. Most residents in Cyberjaya comprises of expatriates and university students from the few tertiary education institutes in Cyberjaya. One of the best things about Cyberjaya is the fact that it is located like a suburban of the ever so busy capital, Kuala Lumpur. Being out of the way of traffic, traveling to the hi-tech city takes one away from the traffic jams and busy streets of Kuala Lumpur. Spanning at an average of about 30 – 45 minutes drive from anywhere in KL, Cyberjaya had been carefully planned and constructed. Almost all highways from KL leads to Cyberjaya including a 30 minutes drive to the KL International Airport.
Companies who are MSC certified are required to relocate their offices in the radius of the MSC (Cyberjaya, KLCC and Technology Park Malaysia). The company sanctioned to evaluate and assess companies in order to award this certification is MDeC (previously known as the MDC) or the Multimedia Development Corporation. MDeC is located at the heart of Cyberjaya among companies like Shell, DHL, HSBC, Nokia and EDS, among some of the MSC certified companies. There are also smaller companies who had obtained the status that have relocated their offices in Cyberjaya. There is a Fire Station, a Bus Terminal, a Fire Station, a Post Office and a small commercial area consisting cafes and restaurants. Apart from global technology companies, there are a few Universities in this town namely Multimedia University, also known as MMU and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, otherwise known as LUCT. There are sufficient amneties in this town that can facilitate traffic in and out of the town, food and beverages in different cuisines, easy access to various highways.
A food court serving local cuisine is located at the Bus Terminal which ferry commuters in and out of Cyberjaya. Here one can find various local delicacies at an affordable price.
Cyberjaya is a town filled with modern infrastructure, excellent facilities and global companies. The Malaysian Government’s effort to attract foreign investors and increase the ICT(Information Communications Technology) in the country can be seen manifested clearly by the modern architectural structures around the town. |
